I admit it. I have a love/hate relationship with this time of year. On one hand I feel the excitement and promise of starting over again. The smell of new books, shopping for all the fresh new pencils, binders and notebooks, getting back to the routine of daily school schedule, etc. It’s filled with possibilities!
On the other hand, however, is the anxiety. The fear that your kids aren’t going to have a good year, that they won’t like their teachers, that they’ll get bullied, that they won’t have any friends…the negative possibilities are endless! It requires a lot of trust and faith to stay out of fear and ground ourselves in the positive.
If we get stuck in a fear spiral, it doesn’t help anyone. Our kids especially suffer. If we are not taking action to reduce and manage our anxiety it is likely that we are projecting outward. In fact, I would even venture to say that if we are not struggling with some anxiety as parents, it’s possible that our most sensitive family member is feeling it for us….sometimes that’s the dog!
So as parents, I think the most important thing for us to do is to actually get in touch with our anxiety and have an assortment of healthy coping practices that we do on the daily.
To help those of you out there that are either feeling anxiety strongly (or NOT feeling anxiety at all) I’ve created this video to help you flow a little more gracefully with all the feels you feel. I hope this helps you to accept yourself as you are without needing yourself to be anxiety free. It’s ok, really!
My sincere hope is that this little technique helps you and that you teach it to your kids. It’s so normal to be anxious this time of year. Let that anxiety flow, just have some tools to keep it at manageable levels so you don’t have to numb out, check out or deny that it’s even there.
Blessings to you and yours,
Nancy
